A Estrada Bérico José Bernardes Galego é a principal via da região do Bairro São Tomé e serve de principal acesso entre Viamão, pela parada 42, ao Bairro Lomba do Pinheiro (Porto Alegre). Mais de 10 mil veículos trafegam por essa estrada diariamente, que passa por diversas vilas do município, entre elas: Araçá, Parque Farroupilha, Planalto, Santa Rita, Nossa Senhora da Conceição, São Tomé e Santa Úrsula, que somam mais de 20 mil moradores. As chuvas dos últimos dias, combinado com a falta de manutenção, deixou a Bérico Bernardes intrafegável, cheia de buracos que formam verdadeiras crateras e que vem trazendo indignação a todos os motoristas dos milhares de veículos que circulam diariamente pela localidade. A situação fez com que o presidente da Frente Parlamentar em Defesa da Mobilidade Urbana, vereador Armando Azambuja (PT), buscasse apoio em Brasília, com o deputado federal Elvino Bohn Gass (PT-RS), que destinou recursos, através de emenda parlamentar impositiva, para pavimentação de ruas em Viamão.
O vereador Armando fez um projeto de lei indicativo, que autoriza o prefeito municipal André Pacheco, a fazer a compensação financeira, de contrapartida acordada, para que esses recursos destinados pelo deputado Bohn Gass, sejam contabilizados para priorização de recursos livres da Prefeitura, ao serviço de obras de capeamento com manta asfáltica e revitalização com sinalização viária, em toda a extensão de 4,4Km da Estrada Bérico José Bernardes Galego, do Bairro São Tomé. A proposição foi acatada em reunião realizada entre o deputado Bohn Gass, o vereador Armando Azambuja, o prefeito André Pacheco e o engenheiro Nilton Magalhães, onde foi acordado o inicio da primeira etapa da obra, ocorrido na última semana, com serviço de reperfilagem (capeamento e manta asfáltica), num trecho aproximado de 250 metros, entre a sinaleira da Estrada da Branquinha, entrada da Vila Martinica, até a primeira figueira da Bérico Bernardes (antigo Aviário), trecho considerado mais crítico da via. Nos demais trechos, nesse primeiro momento serão realizados operação tapa buraco em toda extensão da Bérico. As demais etapas de trechos de capeamento com manta asfáltica e revitalização com sinalização viária, deverão ocorrer, com a compensação financeira, tão logo sejam depositados os recursos destinados pelo deputado Bohn Gass, que se comprometeu em enviar o total de R$ 1 milhão para investimento na via, da qual destes, R$ 750 mil já foram destinados e empenhados, e aguardam liberação do projeto pelo município, e a questão burocrática com as exigências legais do Governo Federal e da Caixa Econômica Federal, para que o dinheiro seja, de fato, depositado na conta da Prefeitura.
